Paste Resource

When you have copied a CERF Resource and paste it in a different location, the Paste Resources dialog is launched. Some of the paste options depend on where you are pasting the resource. The possible paste options are:

  • Paste as Relation – This adds the source Resource as an annotation, which can be accessed from the Relations and Annotations pane under the Resource Info tab. In the Paste Resource dialog, select Paste as Relation and click on the Paste button. This launches the Choose Relation Type dialog. Select a type of relation to paste from the list and click on OK. Note: This list does not include “URL Link” or “Cross reference,” which are appropriate when you add a relation but not when you paste as relation.
  • Paste Version (Paste New Version) – Note that your access role for the source document must permit versioning (i.e., File Cabinet Editor or Notebook Editor or higher). You will not have this option if the resource is Final (and thus cannot be versioned). Paste Version creates a new version (a new instance in CERF that is related to the source Resource through the Version History). All versions may be accessed through the Version History and located (i.e., in a CERF collection) by using the right-click Search > Locations option.
  • Paste New Resource – Submits this Resource to CERF as a new instance (with a unique resource identifier) in CERF. When you view the Resource Info, an annotation will be shown in the Relations and Annotations pane pointing to the source resource. You can right-click on this link to find out more about the source resource.
  • Paste Link – Creates a reference to the source Resource in the destination. Actions on a resource such as check out, inactivate, etc. will be reflected in both source and destination for linked resources. If you are copying a Resource from a File Cabinet and pasting it into a Notebook, the Paste Link option is not enabled unless your File Cabinet is owned by the same Workgroup as the Notebook. Keep in mind that a link is a mirror of the same resource in two or more locations. Any changes you make to the original resource in one location will be reflected in other locations. This does not, however synchronize all actions. For example, if you copy a Notebook page and paste it as a link in another section, and if you later add a new entry to the page, the new entry will only be shown on the page where it is added. In other words, a Notebook, Page, or Entry does not copy as a link, but the resources they contain are copied as links initially. A linked resource may be signed in each of its contexts. This is covered in more detail in the section on Digital Signatures.
  • Paste New Notebook Entry – You will see this option when the destination is a Notebook Page. A Resource may be pasted as a New Version or New Resource (if the source is owned by the notebook workgroup, you will also have the option to Paste as Link).
  • Paste New Notebook Entry on New Page – You will see this option if you copy/paste or drag a file to a Notebook or Notebook Section. A Resource may be pasted as a New Version or New Resource (if the source is owned by the notebook workgroup, you will also have the option to Paste as Link). The file(resource) will be pasted as new Entry on a new Empty Page.
  • Paste as Official Printed Copy – You will see this option when the destination is an embedded resource in the Notebook.
  • Paste Structured Data Entry – You will see this option when you drag and drop a Structured Data card from the SDIMS area onto a Notebook Page.
