The Left Panel is most often used as a Document Tree when the Document Pane is loaded. Other panes can be added to the left panel: Local Files, Checked Out Documents, Bookmarks and Saved Searches.

The Document Tree is now called the Navigator as it allows the user to navigate between their multiple collections of File Cabinets and Notebooks. When you right click on a resource from a Search, you can choose “Search” > “Navigate” and the resource will be highlighted in the Navigator in the Left Panel.
